The Church of the Holy Cross, Avening

Parish People

Priest in Charge

We are very pleased to announce that the Revd Dr Gerald South has been appointed as Priest in Charge (House for Duty) for the parishes of Avening and Cherington, with effect from 9th October 2017.

Organist - Colin Chambers

colin-chambersIn April 2013 we were delighted to welcome Colin Chambers as our new organist.

Colin and his wife recently moved to Shipton Moyne to be nearer his father-in-law, who lives in Avening.  Colin is a retired orchestral flautist, whose last position was as Principal Flute in the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also played with English National Opera, the City of Birmingham Orchestra and the London Philharmonic, including eleven years at Glyndebourne Opera.

Colin's father was a church organist, and in the last few years he has taken up this instrument himself, as he is aware of the shortage of church organists! We are very lucky that he has agreed to join us.

Licensed Lay Minister (Reader) - Derrick Pierce

derrick-pierceHaving served as a member of the Parochial Church Council and Church Warden of St. Mary's Church, Kingswood for a number of years, and following three years training at the Gloucester School of Ministry (WEMTC),

Derrick was licensed as the Lay Reader in that Benefice in 1995. When Derrick and his wife moved to Somerset to take over a Post Office and General Store his licence was transferred to The Bath and Wells Diocese.

In 2004, Derrick and his wife moved to Avening, and we at Holy Cross Church, were very fortunate that Derrick agreed to transfer his licence back to the Gloucester Diocese, where he now serves the Avening and Cherington Benefice.

Derrick can be contacted either on 01453 835090 or by email here

Archivist - Fred Vening

fred-venningFred has done some valuable work for us over the past few years.

He has transcribed the Avening Census Returns for 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911.

He has also produced an indexed transcription of Avening baptisms, marriages and burials from 1558, and has compiled a map of the churchyard.

He has also researched and compiled a book giving details of all those names who appear on our War Memorial in the Church.

He is responsible for church records and archives, particularly Census Returns and Parish Registers and is willing to provide information to those researching family history. No charge is made for any service although a donation to Church funds is appreciated.
